How to Find Your Windows 11 Product Key

Are you trying to locate the product key for your copy of Windows 11? As a cybersecurity expert, I‘ll provide an in-depth guide on several methods to find your important Windows 11 product key code.

A valid product key is essential for activating Windows 11, especially for clean installs. Even if you upgraded from an older version of Windows, it‘s useful to have the key handy in case you need to reinstall Windows or make significant hardware changes down the road.

Follow along as I break down eight techniques, from checking your system information and using built-in tools to contacting Microsoft support if you have trouble.

Why Do You Need a Windows 11 Product Key?

Before jumping into the steps to find your product key, let me clarify the difference between a product key and a digital license for Windows 11.

Digital License vs. Product Key

A digital entitlement attached to your Microsoft account grants you activation rights for Windows 11. This license gets linked when:

  • You upgrade from an earlier version of Windows, like Windows 10
  • Purchase an upgrade from Home to Pro edition
  • Buy Windows 11 through the Microsoft Store app

In these cases, Windows 11 activates automatically without needing to enter a 25-character product key code.

However, sometimes you‘ll have an actual product key instead of a digital license:

  • When buying a retail copy of Windows 11 from an authorized retailer or the Microsoft Store
  • If Windows 11 came pre-installed on a newly purchased computer or laptop

The most common situations where you‘ll need the product key are:

  • Performing a clean install of Windows 11
  • Reinstalling Windows 11 after replacing significant hardware like the motherboard
  • Activating Windows after a hardware change deactivated it

Now that you know when a product key is required, let‘s go over where to find it in Windows 11.

Check System Information

First, a quick note on what you WON‘T find under system settings in Windows 11.

Navigating to Settings > System > About will show a Product ID number. This is NOT the same as your product key. The Product ID varies based on the specific Windows 11 edition and licensing type.

Similarly, the Windows 11 Device ID number listed there is unique to your PC hardware and also not the same as the product key.

Why the Product ID Isn‘t the Product Key

As a cybersecurity professional, product keys and license management are part of my expertise. The Product ID represents the type of license and specific Windows edition.

For example, Product IDs starting with 00371 or 00372 are for retail copies of Windows 11 Home and Pro respectively.

Whereas, IDs beginning with 04770 and 04771 are for OEM versions of Home and Pro.

The product key then gives user-specific activation rights, compared to the edition-specific Product ID. Hopefully this clarifies their distinct purposes.

Now onto the actual methods for locating your elusive Windows 11 product key!

Use Built-in Command Line Tools

My favorite way as an IT pro to conveniently grab Windows 11 product keys is using the command line. The Command Prompt and Powershell have quick commands to display product keys.

Let‘s go through both options.

Method 1: Command Prompt

Here are step-by-step instructions to use Command Prompt to show your Windows 11 key:

  1. Open the Windows start menu and search for "Command Prompt". Select the desktop app version to open.

  2. In the Command Prompt window, copy and paste the following command then press Enter:

wmic path softwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey
  1. Your 25-character Windows 11 product key should be displayed instantly!

Alternatively, you can open Command Prompt by hitting ⊞ Win + R to open the Run dialog box, type "cmd" and hit Enter. Then run the wmic command above.

Method 2: Powershell

Similarly, we can use Powershell to quickly get the product key:

  1. Open Powershell by typing "powershell" in the Windows search box or Run prompt.

  2. Copy and paste this command in Powershell:

powershell "(Get-WmiObject -query ‘select * from SoftwareLicensingService’).OA3xOriginalProductKey"
  1. The key will be shown below the command when you press Enter.

As you can see, using built-in command line tools makes getting product keys fast and straightforward. Next let‘s try using a handy VBScript method.

Create a VBScript to Show the Key

Using a simple VBScript is another neat tactic for tech pros to find Windows 11 keys. Follow these steps:

  1. Right click on your Windows desktop and create a new Text Document. Name it "getkey.txt" for example.

  2. Open getkey.txt and copy and paste the VBScript code below into the text file:

Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
MsgBox ConvertToKey(WshShell.RegRead _
("HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DigitalProductId"))

Function ConvertToKey(Key) Const KeyOffset = 52 i = 28 Chars = "BCDFGHJKMPQRTVWXY2346789" Do Cur = 0 x = 14 Do Cur = Cur * 256 Cur = Key(x + KeyOffset) + Cur
Key(x + KeyOffset) = (Cur \ 24) And 255 Cur = Cur Mod 24 x = x - 1 Loop While x >= 0
i = i -1 KeyOutput = Mid(Chars, Cur + 1, 1) & KeyOutput
If (((29 - i) Mod 6) = 0) And (i <> -1) Then i = i -1 KeyOutput = "-" & KeyOutput End If Loop While i >= 0 ConvertToKey = KeyOutput End Function

  1. Go to File > Save to save the text file with the VBScript contents.

  2. Next change the file extension from .txt to .vbs.

  3. Finally, double click on the getkey.vbs file to run the script. A popup will display revealing your Windows 11 product key!

While this VBScript method involves a few more steps, it‘s a cool way for techies to get the product key.

Moving on, we can also directly access the product key by diving into the Windows registry if needed.

Check the Windows Registry

Windows stores product keys within the registry, specifically under this location:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

Here are the steps to check there:

  1. Type "regedit" in the Windows search box and select the Registry Editor app.

  2. Click on File > Open and copy/paste that registry path to open the key folder directly.

  3. Now expand out the tree and scroll down until you see a value named BackupProductKeyDefault.

  4. Double click it and you‘ll see the Windows 11 product key data on the right pane!

Going through the registry isn‘t always necessary, but useful for tech experts to have in your back pocket.

Up next, a couple of other methods including third-party key finding tools.

Utilize Product Key Finder Tools

If command line and scripts sound too complicated, several handy third-party apps can also show your Windows 11 product key.

Method 1: ShowKeyPlus

One of my top recommendations is ShowKeyPlus available from the Microsoft Store.

With ShowKeyPlus, simply download, open the app, and your Windows 11 product key instantly appears. I really can‘t get much easier!

The utility also includes helpful options like saving your key directly to a text file and clipboard, viewing previous keys, and version/activation troubleshooting.

Overall ShowKeyPlus makes finding and managing Windows 11 product keys simple with an intuitive interface.

Method 2: Product Key Finder Apps

There are alternative third party apps similar to ShowKeyPlus that get the job done too. Some other popular product key finder utilities include:

  • ProduKey – small portable .exe tool
  • LicenseCrawler – finds many license keys beyond Windows
  • Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder – retrieves various software keys

The process is quite straightforward – install the app, open it, click scan/find, and your Windows 11 key appears on screen. Then copy it somewhere safe.

Give one of those utilities a shot if you don‘t want to bother with command lines or scripts.

Check Hardware and Packaging

If the above methods still haven‘t helped locate your Windows 11 product key, let‘s fallback to some other places to check physically.

Method 1: Check PC Hardware

For laptop and desktop PCs that come with Windows 11 pre-installed, manufacturers often include a Certificate of Authenticity sticker somewhere on the device itself displaying the product key.

Look along the sides, back panel, under the battery, inside the housing, even the bottom exterior for this thin sticker with the key printed.

Shining a flashlight can help reading dark areas. Just take care not to damage any internal hardware poking around. Also search thoroughly through any included paper manuals or booklets.

Method 2: Original Packaging

Still no luck finding a product key on the device itself? The next place to check is back inside the original packaging if you still have it.

Dig out the Windows 11 installer DVD, discs, flash drive, or external pack from when you first purchased your PC. Search for a sticker on the case or inside containing 25 alphanumeric characters.

Similarly, inspect the box and any other included materials carefully for a listing of the OEM product key.

Hopefully going over the device and original packaging helps uncover that Windows 11 key code if needed.

Otherwise, let‘s try the final common location – your purchase records.

Check Purchase Details

If you bought a retail copy Windows 11 from a store, website, Microsoft directly or installed on a custom built PC, the product key should have been provided at time of payment.

Method 1: Receipts and Confirmations

Hopefully you kept the receipt or confirmation email from your Windows 11 purchase. Dig up these records and look for the full 25-digit product key generally listed near the top or bottom.

Also check the credit/debit card statement transactions from when you bought Windows 11 just in case.

Method 2: Order History

Similarly, you can access order history and details directly for these common Windows sellers:

  • Amazon – Navigate to Your Orders page
  • Microsoft Store – Go to Order History
  • Newegg – Check your Purchase History
  • Best Buy – View Order Status page

Search thoroughly on those sites around the time of your Windows 11 purchase. With luck the product key will be listed again in the order/purchase information.

Checking back through financial statements and previous orders should help uncover that Windows 11 key when needed.

Alright, let‘s move onto contacting Microsoft as a final option.

Contact Microsoft Support

If you simply cannot locate the product key through any of the above methods, there is still hope! Getting in touch with Microsoft Support can help as a last resort.

Method 1: Online Chat

First, attempt using Microsoft‘s online contact form and chat features on their Windows Support site. Explain you‘re unable to find the product key for your copy of Windows.

They‘ll likely ask for details on where/when you purchased Windows 11 and troubleshooting steps tried so far. Providing any order IDs or license details will speed up the process.

If everything checks out on their end verifying valid ownership, Microsoft Support can look up and provide your Windows 11 product key.

Method 2: Call Support

Alternatively, you can call their Windows Support phone line at (800) 642-7676 if contacting Microsoft online fails or you prefer talking to a human.

Let the representative know you need help locating a Windows 11 product key linked to your account or device details. They can also assist if your copy came pre-installed on purchased hardware.

With competent Microsoft reps available every hour of the day, calling them directly allows swiftly tracking down missing keys when needed.
