I'm trying to find a good way to locate profitable keywords.  I've been using the Microsoft commercial intent tool and that seems to be a good idea.  However, the tool doesn't seem to work all that often.  Is anyone out there using something different that can help me differentiate between like keywords to find the one that will generate both clicks and conversions?

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,

First, I'm with you on Microsoft's commercial intent tool.  The other day I tried to use it and it wasn't working for days after that!  Now, it seems to be OK.

Are you looking for a tool/resource that will show you potential conversions based off of a specific keyword?

Best method I have found is to use google keyword tool and find the highest cpc and volume keywords where you can get a com/org/net domain match.

Caneman,

Are you suggesting that you take the highest traffic keywords (that cost the most) and focus on an SEO strategy?  I think that's a good idea.  I know it takes some time - even with keywords in the URL - to get top rankings.  It requires a lot of original content and link building.  I was hoping to find something that would allow me to short circuit having to start with 100s of keywords and narrow it down to those which are going to convert.

I've been reading about keywordspy, keycompete, PPC Bully, etc. and they seem like possible solutions but are very expensive!

Well, there are too many ways there by finalizing the keywords but before using those tools, you have to search the keywords, analyze them and then finalize them so that you can see your website against some very good and competitive keywords and by this way you can get  a lot in your business through this way....

Forget about commercial intent - it is completely BS and not to be trusted. It's a gimmick. I've written a full post here on my free keyword research method  (or http://drivingonlinesale...eyword-research-method/ since my links are not live at the mometn) that makes me money and helps you to optimize your results quickly (to make a profit). I give the complete method there and I give far more detail and it's written properly.

BTW - ppcBully, Google Cash Detective, Keycompete etc are BS, forget them and don't waste your time or money. The only one I would bother. However Keywordspy  - even the free version has a lot of value. If I had to have any keyword tool that was paid I would use keywordspy. But in saying that with my method you are going to find 98% of those keywords over a 2 week period of testing anyway, so it's kind of not necessary really.

Anyway back to my method. Lets say you are interested in selling dog training products. So you root keyword is 'dog training'. The first thing you want to do is make a list of root keywords that are related to dog training. For example:

dog training
dog obedience
dog potty training

Then wrte separate themed modifier lists. Here is one list based on training solutions:
online
classes
schools
book
course

Now you can come up with tons of these grouped modifier lists, the key is to make sure they have some kind of monetizing intent. Don't use a tool, just use your head. I use google search, wordracker, and free keyword tool to come up with ideas for modifier keywords.

Then you download a keyword multiplying tool like the revenue wire keyword tool.

Then what you do is multiply your root keyword list with one of your modifier themed lists. Now I am aiming for keywords that are 3 word phrases. If the keyword is ultra targeted and obviously going to convert then sometimes I will go for 2 word long phrases, it's a judgment call.

Read my detailed blog post free keyword research method for the rest of the details, in order to compile a list of thousands of targeted and most likely money making keywords.

Well, you can get help form the Google Ad Word tool to search, review and then  select the keywor because you can see the competition of the specific keyword and also its global and local search too...

There are definitely a lot of different ways to improve your keyword research.  I'm currently consulting for a truck leasing and financing company.  In order to find the keywords that would work for their business, we started with the Google Adwords tool.  After finding phrases that had an adequate amount of traffic we looked at competition.

There are a few proprietary tools we look at to gauge keyword competition and opportunity for top rankings.  Although it's never an exact science, you really do need comprehensive diagnostics on the sites that are currently ranking in the number one, two, and three positions for the keywords you're after.

In a few short days, we had identified, commercial truck leasing and truck leasing as the keyword phrases we would use.  They both get good traffic but were less competitive than some of the other phrases we reviewed.  Now that we've handled on page optimization factors we are focusing on link building and off page optimization.
